Program Overview

The Lexington Youth Basketball Association is made up of competitive travel basketball teams for 4th through 8th grade boys and girls living in or going to public school in Lexington Massachusetts. The mission of association is to offer skilled and committed basketball players a competitive experience that improves basketball ability, teaches players to be good teammates, and supports Lexington's high school teams.

Tryouts & Team Formation

  • In general, there are 2 boys and 1-2 girls teams (an A and B team) per grade level, depending on registration numbers.
  • Tryouts are typically held the last week of September and first week of October, with teams announced 1-2 weeks later.
  • Due to limited gym space for practices and games, cuts have to be made and not all children who tryout will be placed on a team.
  • Coaches are selected after the teams are formed, with a preference given to coaches with prior playing and/or coaching experience.
  • New players, including all 4th graders, will need a uniform. After teams are formed an online store for uniform orders will be sent to families.

Season Schedule & Games

  • The regular Metrowest league season runs from December through February, with playoffs the first two weeks of March.
  • There will be 12 league games, running every Sunday (including after New Year’s, on Martin Luther King weekend, President’s Day weekend, and the second weekend of February vacation), except for the Sunday after Christmas.
  • Teams will also have between 4-8 non-league games on Saturdays, at the coaches discretion, with multiple weekends with games on both days.

Practices & Clinics

  • Teams will have two practices per week, with the younger grades typically having one team practice and one grade-wide skills session.
  • Due to gym limitations, practice days may vary week to week and will be announced a month in advance when possible.
  • LYBA does not run off-season clinics nor any in-town only programs, but does provide information regarding other local and regional development opportunities.
